Waylon

Besides Waylon Smithers, perhaps my favorite Waylon is Mr. Jennings.
I've just found a collection in torrent form of his 63 albums he released.  He had a career from '64-2000.  Amazing output.
Most surprising song I've heard thus far: A version of Norwegian Wood.
And to think it started with me looking for "Lonesome, Ornery and Mean"
Man what a great song that one is....

Dinner vs Mulberries.

I am home from my run.
I am pondering my future as it pertains to my dinner tonight.
Curry? Lasagna? (I am seriously considering making a huge one).  Just salad with rice? Baked potatoes?  Ahh...I will go to the store and let the fates decide.

Watch, I'll just order out!

Made lots of ice cream today.  And I ate my 1st mulberry, which the grower grows to let the birds eat.  He plants them next to his cherry trees, and they like them better, since they're sweeter.

Eat some S'Cream!

Ahh, it's a beautiful morning here in Seattle.  I am off today from Empire, since we decided that we only need 2 guys to run the stand.  We'll be rotating days off.  A break!
But it's National Ice Cream Day.  Celebrate it!  Eat some Empire Ice Cream if you can.  Eat Kapiti if you can't....
I finished watching Six Feet Under.  It's a show I started months ago, and the ending is quite heavy.  I cried, it's that heavy.  But, somehow, I felt good too.  Amazing stuff really....

So my day now is I'm picking up Kenji, going to the market, getting some ripe tomatoes and other veggies and eat them with some lamb kabobs.  Or some neck steaks.  I have a hankerin' for lamb today for sure.
Later I'm walking around Green Lake with a friend, and then tonight I'm having dinner with my cousin Paige who just finished at the London School of Economics.
What a free day in the sun!
Ohh, and I gots to make me a pavlova too.  With ripe fresh, local raspberries....to be a locavore in this area in the summer-such pleasure!

FOURTEEN PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE APPETIZERS

From the New Yorker issue pictured below:
FOURTEEN PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE APPETIZERS by Yoni Brenner

1. Top thick slices of country bread with fresh goat cheese. Sprinkle with herbs and bake until crusty; serve to everyone but Jeff.
2. Vegetarian friends? Try veggie rumaki: wrap a strip of imitation bacon around a water chestnut, spear with a toothpick, and broil—but instead of imitation bacon use real bacon, and instead of a water chestnut use veal.
3. Steal Cheryl’s famous potato-salad recipe. When Cheryl asks, “Why did you steal my recipe?,” say, “I don’t know, Cheryl, why did you break my heart?” Then laugh so she knows you’re just kidding.
4. Blend fresh crabmeat with diced avocado, scallions, and a dollop of mayonnaise for a canapé topping so delicious that it will take your guests a full minute to realize that they’re eating it off dog biscuits. Once they catch on, act mortified and stammer that you must have “mixed up the boxes,” until everyone calms down. Then start crying because the biscuits remind you that today marks exactly eight weeks since you had to put down Buster, and you just miss him so much.
5. Tell Marissa that you appreciate her concern, but in the two years since Cheryl broke off the engagement you’ve grown up a lot, and you’re really in a much healthier place now. Then say, “Speaking of fiancés, how’s Peter’s alcoholism?” (Note: This is not technically an appetizer.)
6. For a taste of the U.K., fry up mini-servings of fish-and-chips. Take it to the next level by wrapping them in small pieces of newspaper, which, oddly enough, all seem to be printed with unfavorable reviews of Jeff ’s novel.
7. Have you ever noticed how sun-dried tomatoes and top-grade peyote look exactly the same? Not a suggestion, really. Just saying.
8. Another one for the vegetarians. If they think they like tofu, wait until they sample your delicious mock tofu—all you need is chicken fat, puréed pork loin, and five cups of piping-hot tallow. Cheryl will never know the difference.
9. Tempura makes great finger food, and the batter locks the flavor of just about anything in a savory, opaque crust. Impress your friends with creative choices, from squash blossoms to mislaid car keys to the two-carat engagement ring that Cheryl gave back to you after she “reassessed things.” Surprise!
10. Guests getting antsy? Head them off with a big bowl of steamed mussels. No one can resist mussels, not even emotionally stunted ex-fiancées and their new poorly-received-novelist boyfriends. Besides, disappearing into the kitchen will give you a chance to collect your thoughts and also to go slash Jeff ’s tires.
11. Homemade sugared almonds make the perfect sendoff, sure to please all your guests, even the ones who would be bludgeoning you with a tire iron if Peter weren’t standing between you. Good old Peter. He may not be the brightest or the handsomest person, but he’s very large.
12. As the party disperses, your guests might seem a little ungrateful, calling you an obsessive sociopath or pelting you with sugared almonds. Don’t worry, it’s probably the peyote talking. Just stand on the porch as their cars pull out, your eyes brimming with tears, and shout, “You know, I try, I really do . . .”
13. Add, “My dog died! He died! And he’s never coming back!”
14. Hepatitis! (Note: This is not technically an appetizer.) ♦

Terrorists Fist Jabbing in my Room!

I just got the infamous issue in the mail! (For some reason the CPU won't save the flip of the backwards photo I took...)

Sweet Toast

I am currently eating cinnamon toast for breakfast, something which I haven't done since I lived at home probably.

Man, is it great!

Who else loves cinnamon toast, say YEAH!
(Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal is another matter entirely...)

Longest. All-Star Game. Ever.

The midsummer classic took nearly 5 hours, and didn't end until 1:40am.
It was the longest by time, and by innings-15.
It was incredible for the fact that each time one team got "so close you knew they were gonna score" close, the other pitcher somehow got out of the jam, or an infielder made some incredible throw.
I've never seen 2 perfect drag bunts in a row.
Look at the box score below, grabbed from my screen, they are literally the biggest, most complex ones ever.
A shout out to the Stadium; the only one it'll ever get from me.  I hate the Yankees....

Weekend Ramblings

Ahh...so what's the story in these parts these days....
Friday night I met the owner of Matterhorn/Mighty-Mighty/member of the band Eggs here in Seattle.  Apparently, he's an old friend of my step-sisters from college.  He married a girl from the Hutt, and live in Wellington now.  He's really cool.  I owe him one....
Saturday was a long one, but at the Empire stand in UW, I was in the zone.  I sold more ice cream than the other guys, and I was flying solo.  I even had a girl drop her number.  Actually, her friend did it for her, and there was another woman standing there who was beautiful.  When the utterly gorgeous woman remarked, "wow!  that's pretty amazing."  I replied, "It's just a theme for the day.  I'll take yours too."
She then laughed, and told me that I didn't want hers, since she was married and pregnant....
Sunday though was torture at Fremont.  I had to work so HARD to get people to TASTE ice cream, and it was really hot.  Really hot.  I got discouraged and hit rock bottom when I told a guy who wanted to know where he could get his son a sno-cone that "I wouldn't feed my kid a bunch of that corn syrup crap."  He then said, "Uhhh.....thanks...." and walked away.
We're done in Fremont.
And then I went out with this girl from work to see The Wes Jones Band at the Little Red Hen- I took Damon there to see em when he came to town.
And tonight I just home from giving the 1st ever ice cream factory tour to these 2 regular customers- the girls who took me to eat amazing fruit.  And I received more too....

Now an evening run around the lake accompanied by This American Life.

7.10.2008

More Miracles

Man, it's been a long day.  I had more miracle fruit- I was given some by the girl who gave me the tour of the greenhouse- and had a "tasting" at work.
I tried: Limes (again), pickles (again), blueberries, goat cheese, chocolate, hot sauce, vinegar, arugula, cheap tequila, garlic, mustard and anchovies.
The berries seemed to have lost some of their magic, as most everything tasting only slightly off.
But what did taste strange to me was the tomato-basil sorbet we made tonight.
Yowza!

7.08.2008

Miracles and Miracles

It was a great weekend.  Busy though with the business, as we started our double market days, meaning I got to wake up earlier and end my day later!  Fun!  But I suppose more income is more income at this point....and I made good use of my "position" with the ladies.
You know I'm kinda conflicted in this: I finally have an easy way to talk to ANY GIRL I WANT TO, for essentially no reason- ok "do you want to try some ice cream?" is a reason.  But what's the line I cannot cross?  Are there ethics here?  Can I not press them for more info?  Say, like a number?  Is that greasy?
I might be a little greasy....
Also, I went to the Seattle Int'l Beer Fest Sat night with my friend Dragan (the one whom laughs like a hyena) and met some more ladies there, including one of the Seagals. (They weren't cheering, she was just there.)
And today I met 2 of the girls that are very good customers/biology grad students at the University's greenhouse to eat some miracle fruit.  They block all your sour and bitter taste receptors in your mouth, making sour and bitter things super sweet.  I ate half a lime, and it was like the best margarita I've ever had- super sweet and fresh.  I got some for an experiment at work tomorrow too- I'll be laying out a big tasting spread after doing some research tonight....I'm excited!

4th of July.

Happy 4th of July, belated.  Yesterday I returned from a brief and highly unsuccessful fishing expedition/worst meal of my life to smoke a pork shoulder in my brick box.
It was smoked for 5 hours, then wrapped up in foil with my smoked Mexican chile BBQ sauce and cooked for another hour.  It was then pulled, and mixed up with more sauce.

It was the best BBQ.  Ever.

I could win multiple blue ribbons, because of it's unconventional style and taste.  Some will remember my Blacked Jerk Pork with Sweet Carrot BBQ sauce, but not many, because of it's limited audience.  Some will experience it someday: meaning probably YOU!
I caught up with a few people via the phone, and the best thing ever:  My friend exclaimed, "I'm an independent woman!"  and her sister in the next room just thought she was talking to herself, not realizing she had picked up the phone.

Watched the fireworks over Lake Union and nearly blew everyone up with a failed double mortar attempt.  Sorry Anne.

Fly Me to the Moon

A recap of last weekend:
Drove the Dart via the ferry to Pt. Townsend. It was nice to stretch the cars legs like that. Just cruising. When I got to PT, I went for a run to the lighthouse at Ft. Warden state park, which is about 4 miles return. It was insanely hot! I hung out the rest of the evening, with the exception of the rehearsal. Twilight was spent on a deck at a bar called sirens 3 stories above the water watching the small ferry (a different one) and the seagulls. It was pleasant. Also, the groom, who never drinks, downed 4 shots in something like half an hour. None of it was my doing, I swear.
The wedding was a long day indeed. Very hot again, but I looked good in my tux. The ceremony was nice, short and full of tears for the parents.
The reception, in the shade of a big tent, was accompanied by a gypsy jazz band that was quite good. I even sang a song with them- fly me to the moon. It was my 1st time singing with a live band I think...
After the reception, me and a couple guys returned to Seattle, exhausted, but got super-hot Indian food. I like it when I tell the waiters I want it as hot as they eat it. They always smirk...

This week is crazy busy, as it's our 1st double-market day weekend. So we have lots of stuff to take care of, but I will, seemingly have the 4th mostly to do what I want. I love that.

And, finally, I came across this amazing wine description, from a fancy restaurant in Seattle's website:

"Scot's Wine of the Month
Summer is finally upon us. Let's hope it's not a passing fling. Summer love is in the air and the Seattle-layers are coming off; Beware of the ghostly skin that has yet to see the sun in months. I've finally found my favorite shades, lotion and I am headed to the beach with a bottle of rosé. Domaine Ott's, Les Domaniers is priced right and is perfect for those hot summer afternoons and romantic evenings. It's soft and supple with hints of flowers of Provence and ripe strawberries. Slide the cork out and let the juice flow. The aroma is intoxicating and reminds one of young innocent love. The color is pale pink and not unlike seductive skin that has been veiled from the sun. There is a touch of wet stone and mineral…similar to humid air drench with the mist of crashing waves. This rosé is a clean and refreshing compliment to the thick provocative musk of bodies that have been baking in the hot afternoon sun. Les Domanier's Rosé is dry and great for inviting temptation. Women love it. It's perfect with Spot Prawns, Dungeness Crab and lush pink lips. As the sun sets and you are curled with your sweetheart take a moment to reflect how simply perfect life can be; Your girl, a beautiful sunset, a beach blanket, crashing waves, and of course a perfect bottle of Rosé by Les Domaniers."

It's Hot!

Back from the wedding. It was great, but I'm quite exhausted, so I'll write more later.

It's really hot. Too hot.
Oh, and she said yes.

Urusai Baka ro! (In a mean voice)

I've been waiting for this day a while:
It's one of my best friends, Trever Santora's Last Supper. He's getting married this weekend, and the guys are going out for a blow-out, no holds barred Sushi with a capital "S" dinner in a tatami room at Maneki.

I'm eating all of the restaurants yellowtail. They don't even know!

One might ask: Are there going to be strippers, hoochies or just general shenanigans going on?
No women planned, because I realized that there's those guys, and then there's us.
Games/Plans: Read the same thing above. We are so used to making up our own fun off the cuff that we're just gonna roll- with our shit off safety as they say...

I am planning on getting drunk and shouting like a Yakuza thug while wearing a Hanshin Tigers baseball club headband. The same one I'm wearing in this old picture. Trever is the one standing next to me, Aki below.

Yes, my shirt said "callipygian"

Genghis Khan Likes Butter

This last weekend had some good moments.
Fri PM, house party at my friend Kenji's house, drinking margaritas and meeting a real life Kazak! Yakemash!
Sat, a day at the market, using the van. Afterwards, my dad came up, my brother came over and we went to the pitch 'n putt at Greenlake. I played fine, considering I hadn't swung a golf club in a few years. We then went to a pub for dinner, then to another pub to play darts, where, in the 1st game of cricket, I won in 9 turns! It was amazing. We then went to a place I thought was going to be quiet to play some cribbage with those guys, but I instead ended up talking to 2 girls.
Best part of the conversation: When they mentioned the Genghis Khan movie coming up, I mention I loved a movie that came out about him in 1989: Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.
Ta-Dow!
Sunday was again spent at the market, and the evening was spent cursing after I mowed the extension cord for the lawn mower.  That is why YOU GET A GAS ONE (to my landlord).
And last night, there was trouble at the ice cream factory when the batter Dustin made last week that didn't have any sugar in it got run unbeknownst to me, producing butter.
I then spent 45 minutes cleaning the machine out.  When I corrected the rest of the batter that I found sugarless, by adding more sugar into it, I ran it.
It made more butter.
Seriously.

6.20.2008

Van-sanity. Ok, that's really pushing it....

Well, it's been a regular week for me, until the last few hours of running around dealing with our new van.
It started at 2:30, when I left work, fought to get a cab, and when I got one 15 minutes later, the driver said he didn't want to take me there- it was too far! I guess he didn't have time. Then from the repair shop to the emissions place, where it failed, but got an exemption. I then fought a sunny Friday's rush to the licensing office, and got it sorted out there.
Now I am waiting for a call back from the insurance broker so we can use it this weekend. And only a few minutes before the end of the business week.

What's a boy to do with a Friday evening?

6.16.2008

Ramble On

We had an actually nice weekend weather wise here in Seattle. The 1st half of June had been the worst on record, with the local paper reporting that we were actually colder than Siberia!
But the sun came, we sold well (Unless we go home with nothing, I probably will never say we destroyed) selling out of all but 2 of our flavors.
Ahh...what else of note. Cooked a graduation dinner on Sat night for 350 kids. I've never seen such consumption of food. They ate everything!
And last night, I watched the NBA finals for the 1st time this year. I haven't even really seen any other NBA games this season, what with the no cable/tv antennae....which is probably a good thing!

6.12.2008

Ice Cream Doings

It's been very low excitement round these parts.
We did make more ice cream than we ever have made this week, with the new machine. It was in one 8.5 hour shift of insanity!
And we got a used van, and I drove it around a bit.
It's sad to say that a '91 Dodge Van with a 6 cylinder engine is fast. But it is compared to my car (which has the pre-curser of the van's engine in it....)
Who can come up with a good custom plate?

6.09.2008

Alone in the Wild

I will start by saying it's been a very hard week for me. I'm not writing about why it's been difficult, but I will write about my experience of trying to get some clarity.

I went camping, alone in as remote as a place I could get to. I went into the Cascades, and ended up halfway between Hwy 2 and I-90. I took my car, the Dart, down a 15 mile, pot-hole filled, gravel road. It took me nearly an hour to do so. There wasn't anyone else out there.
I fortunately have a friend who lives in "that general direction" who I had conferred with before going out. I think he was doing some recon for me, and he went out that direction in the morning before I went. He called, and said that I'd need waders to get into the lake I was going for. I could borrow some from him.
So with waders, and my pack, and bear spray, I left the trailhead and went into Forest Service land. First I crossed a 100 yard bog, then went through old growth forest, then (I just found out) I went the wrong way. I hit a river I had anticipated, and crossed it, downstream from where I should've been. I then couldn't find the trail. All there were were beavers and their pond. I figured that they'd come in and covered the trail. It was getting late in the day, and so I struck camp in a spot that had been camp for someone else before.
I was right on the river on a small peninsula, or rather, an isthmus. I pitched my tent, built a fire, had dinner, and it was 10:30 before I knew it. The stars came out. I was alone. Very alone.
I awoke this morning to the sound of rain, and due to the poor soil of said isthmus, my fly wasn't as tight as it could've been. I packed some things away wet, ate an energy bar, and crossed the river, getting up to nearly my waist. Back through the woods and to my car, getting to do that crazy drive again. I listened to my dad's new album on the ride back.
I felt I got some clarity I was looking for. It was nice to be able to think without distraction. I think that is rarely attained in our lives nowadays. It's a shame really...
Oh, yes, and no sasquatch sightings either!

6.05.2008

Ice Cream Awesomeness

I was just trolling the web for news on Empire Ice Cream, and over at the Seattle Weekly, I found this.

"The Empire guys start with the the milk, no ice cream mix for them, and you can taste it in the goods."

6.04.2008

Time & Enchiladas

So the long story short is this:
We made ice cream in 35 minutes.  What would've taken us an estimated 6 or 7 hours of time in the old machines took us 35 minutes.
If time equals money, we're r-i-c-h.

Aaron likey.  I also likey enchiladas.

6.02.2008

Sorry Kiwis.

I had to get my phone's codes updated- the one I bought in NZ.  I called T-Mobile, and when I explained the story to the woman at customer "care," she said, "you lived in New Zealand?  ....You know I have no idea where that is.....it sounds like it's in Europe somewhere."

I was in disbelief. I told her it's in the South Pacific.  She replied, "Really?  I am so bad with geography."  No you're ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE.

I don't know which is worse, to be un-locatable or a dumb American- oh wait, I think I do.

True story.

6.01.2008

Mi Vida Loca

So we got our new machine, but have yet to use it.  That's due to the fact it was actually delivered late, and then had to wait for the electrician.  And when it came time to make some ice cream, we only needed to do a small amount....so Tuesday night we'll be rockin' it.
It's been a good/busy/tiring last few days.
Fri: 12 hours of cooking at the club for the Copper River Salmon winemaker's dinner.  Then I drank too much champagne, and got little sleep.
Sat: Woke up feeling bad, for previously mentioned reasons.  Worked the U-District market, which is vary lame for us.  We're trying to change some things about that, but it's not in our hands ultimately.  I then went to the club to do inventory, and after that the Brazil vs Canada soccer friendly.  It was such a great game with Brazil's obvious talent, and Canada playing as well as they could (in fact they almost beat them!). 3-2 Brazil.  Then a big sushi dinner.  And a late to bed night.
Today: Woke up early, but feeling fine.  At the market at 9, and had a pretty good day, interviewing with a food critic for the P-I (paper).  Now I'm done, and am sitting here exhausted.  But I'm going for a run before I pass out!
Life is good.

5.27.2008

Cuts and Cream

Here I sit, typing with one hand at work, due to the fact I just cut myself. I'm waiting for the thing to close up....I should probably go to the hospital, but I don't want to wait for 5 stitches.
I must've learned this attitude from my mom, who forgot to tell me my lil sister had broken her arm-over a week ago. It apparently took her a few hours to get Sophie to the hospital, because it didn't "seem so bad." When Sophie didn't want to go into the store to get a treat, that's when she really got worried.

My mom is going to be angry at me telling this tale.
Ice cream went pretty well last weekend- it was excellent to be out there. I knew that's where I belonged.
Our new machine is being delivered this very moment! Hazah!

Best Player of the 1990's

I forgot to mention this:
I got the card I never obtained as a child, a MOST coveted Ken Griffey, Jr. rookie card from '89 Donruss (they were $.50 a pack back then!) from a pack my step-dad gave me.

I hope he gets traded back. Except they won't be calling him "the kid" anymore.

I loved this one:

Camping to Zeppelin

Man!
I slept in- I am off today. Nice to catch up on sleep. I put on Zeppelin II, sip strong coffee, have my "Korean Farmer's Breakfast." That consists of rice, kim-chee, and a lightly scrambled egg mixed with soy sauce and chili sauce.
The record is loud.
I bought a tent last week, a solo, ultra lightweight one. I had it set up in my room, but didn't take any pics. I've been putting together a gear list of light solo equipment. I think I have it all now. I filled my pack to the Lemon Song- the lighter, smaller pack (40L), instead of the bigger one (85L) I got from Trever that he used on his Siberia trek.
I fit it all in/on. Biggest thing/luxury: A nice sleeping pad. One cannot skimp on that I think. It will keep you comfortable, rested and most importantly, warm.
Here are pics of me all kitted up:

Call sign: Hammerhead.

History has taught us NOTHING.

I have a subscription to the New Yorker magazine (thanks to Paul). There was an article I just read about Herodotus' Histories. He's the guy that invented history- as a genre. He wrote a massive 9 volume series on the history of the Greek-Persian wars. Half of the series is about the back-stories of the various peoples involved. And the other half is about the actual wars between the various Greek city states and Persia. Xerxes was nuts, but if you saw 300, then you already knew that right?....
Anyways, the article ends with this:

Then, there is the story itself. A great power sets its sights on a smaller, strange, and faraway land—an easy target, or so it would seem. Led first by a father and then, a decade later, by his son, this great power invades the lesser country twice. The father, so people say, is a bland and bureaucratic man, far more temperate than the son; and, indeed, it is the second invasion that will seize the imagination of history for many years to come. For although it is far larger and more aggressive than the first, it leads to unexpected disaster. Many commentators ascribe this disaster to the flawed decisions of the son: a man whose bluster competes with, or perhaps covers for, a certain hollowness at the center; a leader who is at once hobbled by personal demons (among which, it seems, is an Oedipal conflict) and given to grandiose gestures, who at best seems incapable of comprehending, and at worst is simply incurious about, how different or foreign his enemy really is. Although he himself is unscathed by the disaster he has wreaked, the fortunes and the reputation of the country he rules are seriously damaged. A great power has stumbled badly, against all expectations.
Except, of course, the expectations of those who have read the Histories. If a hundred generations of men, from the Athenians to ourselves, have learned nothing from this work, whose apparent wide-eyed naïveté conceals, in the end, an irresistible vision of the way things always seem to work out, that is their fault and not the author’s. Time always tells, as he himself knew so well. However silly he may once have looked, Herodotus, it seems, has had the last laugh.

See? I told you no one learns anything from the past. Life is cyclical. Turn!

Amber Alert

Alert! Due to events out of my control, the BBQ/Sarlacc pit was not finished.

I did eat some great sushi late Sat night, after work (which became an unfunny joke with me as the punch line), go for 2 good runs, and attended a BBQ.

Next saturday I hope. Or else.

5.02.2008

Pit

I've been pretty distracted & unfocused this week, but on Sunday I have big plans:

I am making a BBQ pit.  In my backyard.  It's gonna be sweet.

I'll be using an old Weber grill for a few components and bricks for the bottom part.  Maybe I'll be lucky enough to have it done in time to do some pork shoulder all afternoon....

Now that's what I call a BBQ Pit!

It might as well been a picture of anything else....

Finding Satchmo'

Well, I found proof the Satchmo' exists:
He's so intelligent that he was able to delete pictures of himself of the trail- camera of my friends, and figured out a way to only leave pics of us on it!  That sneaky snake!

We were up in the remote foothills, following elk trails, sustaining ourselves on miner's lettuce and fiddlehead ferns.  In other words: eating things that taste like dirt.
It was nice to be out there, but it was cold (unseasonably, actually for those in other countries, i.e. SNOW).  Lots of elk around, supposedly there's a herd of over 200 living in those parts.

I went down to Oly after these adventures, and built some boxes with my dad for tasting ice cream out of at the markets.  They have a removable wire mesh tray to keep the ice cream off the dry ice directly.  Obviously, you can tell which one I made, and which one he made.  (But mine was done in 1/3 of the time!)

4.16.2008

Sasquatch!

I'm going sasquatch hunting this saturday.  Seriously.  I've been invited.

Check out this site! I don't play!

Apophis Asteroid

This is why old people aren't always right. A 13 year old German boy has proven NASA made the wrong calculations. Those dumb rocket scientists!

"The shockwaves from that would create huge tsunami waves, destroying both coastlines and inland areas, whilst creating a thick cloud of dust that would darken the skies indefinitely." Yeah!

BTW, Apophis was the main bad guy in Stargate: SG-1 seasons 1-4.
What a bunch of nerds at NASA!.....er...yeah, nevermind.

The Worst Foods In America

Are ironically, from a steakhouse with an Aussie theme.
The description:  "This weapon of mass construction is the caloric equivalent of eating 14 Krispy Kreme doughnuts, before your dinner arrives. Even if you split this "starter" with 3 friends, you'll have downed a meal's worth of calories."

Ahh, America!
This is part of Men's Health Mags "No-Diet Weight Loss SOLUTION."
The solutions involve eating a Big Mac instead of a Whopper.  WTF?

I knew Wal-Mart was messed up...

...when I read this article. Apparently, the bosses are dressing up in drag, and being recorded.

Actually, I knew it was a messed up place before that. On my roadtrip, I stopped at Wal-Mart to get some camp fuel, and other low-priced items. (This was in Kingman, Arizona).
There was a (modeled after the NYC version) shirt that proclaimed, "I Jesus!
They use 5 times the plastic bags that one really needs. I'd hate to strain myself on that gallon of 2%!
I looked at all the shoppers, and I realized that they're literally all fat and ugly.

And I'm an accepting person.

Delusion.

A nice blog post about how Hillary Clinton claims Memphis to be the NCAA Champions.  Even though they lost.

Thanks to Paul.

Hunting!

Shhh......I'm hunting for a Wii.  Those are elusive buggers!

4.06.2008

3 things.

A couple un-related things:
-baseball season has started, which I love. The Mariners are going to be good to playoffs this year I think. They just need to sign Barry Bonds to fill the DH spot. Then we'll be solid.
-NCAA Tournament. I watched the semis last night, which were the 1st games I've really sat and watched this year. Memphis vs Kansas is going to be a good one I think, since they're 2 big and fast teams. There should be some awesome play. I couldn't believe that UK got up on North Carolina by 28 just over 1/2 way in the first half. I've never seen anything like it. UNC then came back as close as 4, then blew it again, and lost by 20.
-I went Paintballing for the 1st time. Had a blast, even though I got tagged a couple times. It was way out in the sticks of Duvall, and so we were in the forest, in the mud, and in the paint. I'm going again for sure.

Don't know what I'm doing today though....

Amazing Alligators!

Amazing! That's the only way to describe this photo gallery of my trip!

The little Alligator was our camp mascot. He can also grow 10x his normal size if you leave him in water, as well as melt on Angie's dash if he hangs out in the desert.

I'm Back

Hey everyone. I'm back from my vacation, and it went by way too quick, as expected.
I don't have the pics for y'all yet, but I'll recap it for ya.

Down to the redwoods first. It rained. A lot. We abandoned the tent after the 1st night, and slept in the car. It turned out that our campsite sat above clay, so it drained really slowly. If we had let the tent lay, we would've been under 2-3 inches of water.
But the hiking was amazing, since it was serene and mystical, with the fog hanging around the tree trunks.
Then to SF, and a stay in the tenderloin, the seedy part of downtown. We had a great meal at Cafe Zuni too.
The next notable thing was going to Magic Mountain to ride the coasters. I was nervous at 1st, but quickly got over the feeling, and enjoyed them. Going upside down 7 times? Whatever!
We then we went to San Diego and saw my step sister Heather and Angie's friend Chris. We had a great time there- the weather was perfect!
Out to the desert. Joshua tree was very different for me. I've never spent much time in the desert, with it's quiet nothingness. The trees are quite peculiar as well....
Then to the Grand Canyon. It's one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. We hiked down into the canyon, descending over 2000 feet, on a 6 mile hike. One day I will go down to the bottom and see the river and look up to the top of the hole I've fallen into...

Vegas. I lost.

Sequoia Nat'l Park was really cool. I wanted to explore it further, but in reality, one needs to hike into the depths of the park. There's really only 1 road through the park, and you see probably 1/5 of the park from it. And in the adjoining King's Canyon, you see far less from the road.

From Sequoia, we went to a really nice lake outside of Fresno, and drove back up to Seattle with a stop in Ashland, OR- home of the Shakespeare Festival.

We spent a lot of time in the car, but saw a lot of my country, which I feel I haven't properly done in the past. But now I know this: There's a lot of truly beautiful land out there. It never failed to make me realize how lucky I am to live here for the splendor of the Nat'l Parks.
It was a great trip, and I'm sad I have to go to work tomorrow!

sunday reading

I just read this article on the oil/war conspiracy. It's nothing new to me, but it's nice it's in the Washington Post.

I also had a big meal of goat bbq last night (with goat meatballs too). Tasty!

Beware!

Oh those ides!  Always misbehavin'.
Who knows what and when I'll post next.  I leave tomorrow, and will be on the road.  So don't get too worried about the blogging absence.
Later.

Windy

It's been windy like Wellington this week here in Seattle.

It reminds of the time pretty much the same time last year, right after I returned, when I was downtown at a corner. A huge gust came and these 2 women right next to me went crazy. I laughed out loud (unintentionally) and they looked at me. I just said to them, "this isn't windy. I know windy!" I then put on my cool sunglasses and jumped into my sports car and drove away.*

*That last sentence may not have happened. But it may have too....

Great Dentists

Not much happening round these parts, except preparing for the aforementioned trip this coming weekend.
I did go down to Oly to see my brother and my friend Aki, both of whom came home for spring break.
One other note: save your money and DO NOT PART WITH YOUR MONEY TO SEE 10K B.C.

It was boring, oh so boring, and terrible!  But apparently, there were some great dentists long, long ago...

Tripping

I'm starting to make a pile in my (just cleaned up) room for stuff for my road trip.  Angie and I are leaving the night of the 16th, and will be gone till the 1st.  I have a big list I've realized.  And I can take a big list as well.  With an Honda Element we have a lot of space, but she just bought a roof rack, after a ridiculous amount of hassle.  But I'll let her tell that story (which I doubt she wants to revisit).
Anyways.  I think I've bought all the gear I'm going to need.  I like gear I've realized.  There's one new thing you can say you know about me:  Alligator likes gear.
And the number 1 question of the last 2 weeks:  What's your route?
For (hopefully, but I highly DOUBT) the last time:
Seattle to Portland
Portland to Redwoods Nat'l Park
Redwoods to San Fran
San Fran down Highway 1 to a park on the ocean out side of Santa Barbara
From there to Six Flags Magic Mountain (rollercoasters)
To San Diego
From SD to Joshua Tree Nat'l park
Then to the Grand Canyon
Then to Vegas
Then after I win big, to Sequoia Nat'l Park.
Then up I-5 to northern california/oregon border
Then back to Seattle

A lot of miles.  Some stops are a couple of nights.  Most are one.
It should be fun.

Speaking of dirtbags....

I really hate Clay Bennet.

And I really cleaned up the title by using "dirt."

Dubya vs Cheeseburgers

A couple of things:

It's amazing how little press Dubya is getting these days. He really has dissapeared into the mists of the media. I realized yesterday on the radio that I was hearing his voice for the 1st time in days, but I constantly hear McCain, Hillary and Obama on NPR. Also, for the 1st time, I read a story where the quote of Bush was ACTUALLY WHAT HE SAID. With all the stammering! For years, the white house had cleaned up his speech for press quotes, but now.....who cares? (Really, who does?)

Also, a taste test of a cheeseburger in a can.

Curse of the Colonel!

Today, on the Bus, we passed a guy with a Hanshin Tigers Jersey on.  Not only that, but it was a Randy Bass Jersey.

Now I didn't get excited you see, since I didn't grow up in Japan.  But the Hanshin Tigers are, for my friend Aki, the best team EVER.  And guess who his favorite player of all time is?  Randy Bass.
I called him to let him know what I had seen, and he went a little crazy, reminiscing about Bass' great past, and the Hanshin wins of years ago (Hanshin was good in the mid 80's.....).
But reading the wiki of Bass was pretty interesting.  Have you ever heard of the Curse of the Colonel? (As in Sanders, my friend.)

2.26.2008

I'm back.

So I was criticized last weekend for going a week without posting on my blog.  It's because perhaps these days, it seems I'm rarely at my computer, and if I am, I'm doing other things, like watching episodes of Lost or SGA....

Anyways, I got my new iPod today.  It's so much smaller than my last one, but I suppose there needs to be some advancement.  One thing to add:  It's really nice to be in Amazon's neighborhood, since my free 5 day shipping was delivered overnight, once it left the warehouse.
I needed to get one (which is 8 gigs) since my old one (4 gigs) freaked out and froze once it was filled with 700 mb.  So long Wani-san Jr!  All hail Wani-san Jr.  the 2nd!

I am now officially the Sous Chef of the Seattle Harbor Club.  I work in the city now, whic is immensely better in terms of commute via the bus.  I have myriad busses to choose from, as opposed  to 1 an hour (to home at night).  I am finally on salary, and making more the the US average per year for the 1st time in my life.  Yeah me.

I'm going to go run now.  I promise I have more to say this week, and I really hope to get the pics up this week of my party as well.  Have fun y'all.

Oh! I got a Jew's Harp!

Alligator's Birthday

It's my birthday today!
I am 26 years old.  It seems like a big number to me.
But I know it's not that big.

I've already had been treated to a wonderful breakfast at Señor Moose by my girlfriend Angie.  And they gave me a piece of cake too.  Cake for breakfast dessert is reserved for special occasions truly.

I have a party planned for tomorrow night, and will fill y'all in with the details in the aftermath!

My Morning Jacket

My winter jacket problem has (I hope) come to an end.  I wonder which will end 1st, my prob or winter?

Anyways, I had a hard time finding a heavy coat- I didn't have one, since I missed last winter, and I can't remember now what I did before (fleece and a rain coat I think) I left for NZ- and I decided I was done being cold.  So I looked and looked, then decided on getting a down jacket from REI.  It seemed a wise move, being in a sleeping bag jacket.  But it ripped 3 days after I got it, and I retuned it.  My 2nd one lasted longer, but it split it's seems.  The one great thing about REI is that you can take things back for whatever reason.  2 years of shoe wearing, and they break- you can take them back, and get your money back.

So I took 2nd coat back, got credit, and it turns out, they've gotten rid of all their winter coats.  There was nearly nothing.  And I was there a month ago, and they had tons.

So I left angrily, went to 2nd ascent, and payed less for a coat that's sold for waaaaay more elsewhere.  It's a GoLite.  I like in the "uses" description it reads:

  • Alpinism
  • Ice climbing
  • Backcountry skiing/snowboarding
  • Around town
  • Skiing
Guess which one I use it for?

Catching Up

So it's been a little while since I posted, but it's been a lot going on for me, so here it is:
I went to Kentucky, with my girlfriend to see her family (I met her dad!). It was my 1st time to the south, even though many people consider Louisville (properly pronounced "Lew-vull")
to be elsewhere, like the Ohio River valley....but I noticed a stereotypical southern experience. The accent, the large & noticeable Baptist presence, the twisters, the drinkin', the rebellin' and such....
We had fun. We ate some damn good BBQ (The elusive Owensborough black sauce on chopped mutton or pork). We drank fine bourbon. We shopped at Wal-Mart. We played nails, and had the cops called on us.
I got a shirt that says, "gettin' lucky in Kentucky." It's green, and I'm wearing it right now.

It appears my work is in Seattle now. I will become the Sous Chef in Seattle. We still need to settle on salary, a big issue I know, but I think it will be good. It's a better bus ride to there, that's for sure. And it will be more flexible in the hours.....I'll keep ya posted.

On Monday, Empire Ice Cream awakened from our winter hibernation to represent at the 3rd Annual Seattle Farmer-Chef Collaborative. It was basically us networking with local producers and chefs, eating and drinking fine things, talking with the guy who was single-handedly responsible for bringing Belgian beer to the USA in the late 70's, and stealing 2/3rds of a suckling pig that had been poorly butchered.
One of the afternoon demos was "how to break down a whole pig." The chef who did it, did a shoddy job (not that I'd do much better, but she's giving CLASS), and when the end of the day came, I heard one of the organizers say to someone, "that pig is still upstairs, and the janitors don't know what to do with it." I sprinted up the stairs to get a garbage bag, and stuffed 2 fresh hams (the rear legs) and the 2 ribs (with loins attached) into said bag.

We ate a good meal that night.

Got Haggis?

Last night after working a long and busy day, exhausted from an antibiotic I took (for a cough that won't quit), I went to the pub for a scotch whiskey.  And not for just a drink.  A drink to commemorate Scotland's Robert Burns' Birthday.
He wrote many poems in a uniquely Scottish voice, and until I met Morgan, had really no idea of the guy.  I like the idea that he wrote odes to food and drink.  He must have been a passionate, passionate man.....

Address to a Haggis, with the modern translation.

Man, the haggis I had in Edinburgh was great.  I can taste and visualize that night well!

I make you jealous

Currently I'm sitting at the library, and have found the complete Stax/Volt Soul Singles 1968-1971.

It is 9 Discs!

I can't wait to listen to all that sweet soul music.

1.22.2008

Wacky Mackers.

I was looking for a reference to something called, "spicy berries."  They apparently do not exhist, which is what I figured from the start.
But what I did come across is this:  McDonald's' International Menu Items.

I was intrigued by the India section- Maharaja Mac?
Other notables: All meat served in McDonald's in Israel is kosher, something called a McChutney Burger, meatballs as a side for Happy Meals in Sweden.  Pineapple as one in Hawaii.  The beer in France.  And why was I never told about Pasta Zoo?

1.21.2008

Golden Sunrise

Man what a morning!
I wish I had a camera with me, as the Olympics were a real treat this morning with the golden sunrise on their snow-capped peaks.  Normally I don't drive so slow to enjoy them, but I was behind a cop, so I slowed my roll....

In -4 degrees no less! (-24 with the windchill)

Now You Have Seen It All.

When was the last time you were on a Japanese Celebrity's Blog?

Bet you didn't know the Alligator was famous-su in Japan.
The only thing better than that of course is to translate it!

1.08.2008

This post really doesn't merit a title.

Not much is really happening this week.
I bought a camp stove after an excruciating amount of thought and comparison, as well as being offered different opinions and perspectives from REI staff.  And I ended up leaving the store after 1.5 hours of this game, empty handed.  I did, like I said, buy one used at Second Ascent.
I'll be using it this weekend when I go sledding at the Summit with my girlfriend.  We might snow-camp too.

Man, what a Seahawks game.  Good luck with the Packers on the Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field.

Captain Nemo vs. Vampires!

I recently finished reading Jules Vernes' classic "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."  I can't recommend it highly enough, even if you've read it a long time ago, it's such a great adventure/interesting view of the future.  I like the ideas of getting all your power from seas water, and that the south pole is a mountain in an open sea surrounded by miles of icebergs in an impassible wall.  Then I thought it would be a grand idea to watch the movie, made by
Disney (starring a young Kirk Douglas- in 1954!).

What a crock!

Disney really messed it up!  The movie rushed through many parts, skipped others, and re-arranged the order of others.  The ending is completely different too- an invading army?!?

WTF?!?

And most importantly, they made Captain Nemo meaner; more villianesque than in the book.  Vernes' Nemo is a melancholy character you're suppose to dislike, but pity I feel as well....

Also, I've been turning up this band that's been playing on KEXP, Vampire Weekend.  They're from Brooklyn, and you can catch some of their songs on their myspace.
They were also KEXP's 22nd best album of the top 90.3 albums of 2007.  I hate Radiohead.

HNY 2008

Happy New Year everyone.  I hope you had a great time on the eve, and on the 1st.
My new evening was working until about 10:45, and then I raced to a party in Crown Hill.  It was alright, but they did have the greatest record collection I've seen to date....

Yesterday, over at Dustin's house, we had a traditional Southern New Year's day menu:
Fried Chicken and Hoppin' John.  That's black eyed peas and rice basically.  We also made banana margaritas, which cannot be consumed fast enough, as delicious as they are.

2007 is gone, but it was probably the most amazing year of my life.  From having a wonderful girlfriend, to starting up the business, to going on the South Island road trip, it was an epic year indeed.  May 2008 be just as great, or hopefully, better!

12.27.2007

Band Names

Wow!  What a holiday time.  I usually don't get into the holiday spirit like others, but when you have friends and family like mine, one can come around.
I received so many great gifts, some highly practical (down slippers which feel like a sleeping bag on your foot), some odd (an ancient coin of the Magi), and a few that are one of a kind.

Those included:

A sequence of pictures of me doing the Haka, then jumping into the cold-as pond on a camping trip last summer (and me running out)

A song composed and performed by The Brothers Ulmer (They need a better band name, like Wani's Ulmers, perhaps?) about me and my adventures. Kenji has come along way in his guitar playing.

And a Guru Josh calendar done by Morgan, with help from the "Cream of the Hutt."  (Another good band name!)  All the months accompany a portrait of people from NZ with the Guru Josh record I stole from the Pacific Inn Pub/Gave to Morgan.  Add to that the fact that all the individuals have the same stupid pose, and include some appropriate frame of reference to how I knew them in a former life.  Excellent.

I love you all, thank you very much.  I feel loved and that's the greatest thing.

Speaking of love, I'm working the breakfast shift at work (6am start) and my soups this week rock 'em hard:
Wed- SW Black Bean with Cilantro Crema
Thurs- Braised Pork with White Beans, Fennel, Mustard Greens and Smoke Spanish Paprika.
Fri- Matzoh Ball.  I've made my own matzoh.  Really.

Too bad there's no one around to eat them....

12.22.2007

X-Mas.

Merry Christmas and/or Happy Holidays (don't forget boxing day either)

I'll be in Olympia for the majority of the next few days.

Have fun!

GeoSkillz

I was listening to PRI/BBC world's show "The World" and this was on there:

See how good your geography skills are.  I got to level 10.

I'm going to......Memphis?!?

I had a date last night with Angie where we went to the used bookstore down the way, and looked at travel guides to gain a better sense of what we wanted to do.

So I went straight for The Onion's Atlas. I figured it would be a fine place to start to appreciate the lesser known factoids of a prospective country of terminus. Not really, but Peru's sub-header was "Always with the damn pan-flutes!" I think it genius for some reason.

Then I had the great idea of just going to the airport on the 1st day of our vacation off. We could go to the ticket counter, and tell them we'd be willing to fill in available seats for cheap. 2 tickets to Memphis, Egypt?! No, Memphis, Tennessee. Errrr.....

We made a choice, and it's secret. I will tell you this: It's not Memphis. (damn)

And then we had Italian food at Bizzaro. It was bizzare indeed. It was an oddly decorated hole in the wall that specializes in fresh pasta, and it was fine. It hit all my pre-conceived expectations.

I leave you with this:
Apparently, there's to be a nails feature at a party in NZ, and all I have to say is this: No costumes or using "tournament of death" to describe it. Those ideas are patent pending!

12.16.2007

Sunnier Climes

Hey, my tough holiday season is over.  It was really quite a breeze- mostly just showing up was what was required of the alligator.

I'm going to wrap presents now, then run, then I have a date with Angie to look at possible vacation destinations.  A truly sad statement of mine: we cannot make it to New Zealand in the spring of 2008.  It's too far to go/too much money spent on the ticket for only a couple weeks' time....

I do get to go someplace new, tropical and sandy though....that's not bad.

And there won't be any sandflies.

12.13.2007

Crazy like a Fox.

I hurt my back tonight at work, and can't figure when it happened. I was going to run, but now I want to sit. And even that feels moderately uncomfortable.

I have a story from the other night I want to share:
I had picked Angie and her friend up from the airport late (back from Costa Rica). Dropped off said friend, and was near her house by the fisherman's terminal, when we got flagged down by a guy. He ran over to the car, visibly upset, and said, "call the cops! My mom has been kidnapped!"
I called 911, and the explained my position to the dispatcher, who wanted to talk to the dude. He was right by the car, telling his story, which kinda was convoluted, and then when the dispatcher asked him where he was, he ran away with my phone. So I ran after him, leaving Angie in the car, in the road with the flashers on. After a couple more minutes of him talking to the dispatcher, I got the phone back, and the 1t thing she asked was "is this guy a little off his rocker?"
I replied, "perhaps, but the cops need to come here regardless." He was a little crazy....

So they were on there way and so were we.....

____
How do I keep Angie blocked from commenting? The Calery kids really have bad netiquette.

Gone Bottling

I'm busy right now!

Super secret project stuff!

12.07.2007

WTF

uh....Mister Splashy Pants? Really? Come on.

Surprise Pockets (Not as tasty as Hot Pockets)

I got woken up this morning by someone calling, then as soon as I answered, they hung up. I think that's the worst. The only thing that got them off the hook, was that even if I had remembered to turn off my cell phone, I would've been woken by the recycle trucks lumbering through the alley below my house. Glass breaking is the best alarm clock.....

I might be in the thick of the work/holiday calendar, but it's emerged it's quite easy this year. It's like we didn't get tons of parties booked- a sign of the downward economy? I think it might be, since not going out is one of the things I do when I'm short on cash. Anyways, it's really a matter of showing up and trying to fit all the food into our closet/walk-in fridge.

And lastly for this post, I surprised myself last night, when I was watching a DVD. Apparently, there was an episode of SG-1 I hadn't seen yet. It was like wearing a jacket you haven't worn in a while, and finding $10 in the pocket.

I'm gonna go check my pockets!

12.01.2007

Adults Like Snow-Based Beverages!

It snowed today. A whiteout, which is pretty rare here in Seattle.

It all started shortly after I arrived at work, staring down a day of sprinting to get things done. We did get things done, but then as soon as food needed to go out, shite hit the fan, so to speak. Too many new people in the front of house, and too few in the kitchen....always the problem.

But the snow- I was really bummed I wasn't outside sledding with the Snow Dogz. I think I have to take a trip to the pass and sled this winter.
And by the time I left, at 11, it was raining/melting. On my lawn, I collected snow for a few snowballs, and a glassful. I now am having a cocktail, Whiskey and Snow. It's like shaved ice, with bourbon flavour!

11.28.2007

Are you High!?!

hey everyone. I commence my re-telling of my Thanksgiving weekend here:

Saturday mid-day I drove down to Olympia with Angie, and we joined my family for the proper dinner. I roasted the bird, made stuffing, mashers, gravy, a green bean casserole (but not the nasty kind), and cornbread. Added to the mix by family: Cranberry sauce and this Jello/fruit mold, which is my favorite Andrews family food tradition. Seriously, it's AMAZING.

After rocking the Trivial Pursuit power hour, we went with my brother downtown to meet my friends Chris and Trever for drinks and shuffleboard at the Brotherhood. Outside the bar there's a Gyro cart called "gimpy's gyros." Apparently, the guy got in a bike accident, and used the money to do that....

Sunday was brunch at my momma's, and then Angie and I went for a walk with my dad. It was kind of crazy and structured now that I think about it....hmmmm.....it's quite difficult to split my time up when I go to Oly for only one night- so many people request my lovely company.

Well, it begins this week- the holiday madness. From Friday to the 16th of Dec, it will be work, work, work. Good thing for Angie she's going to Costa Rica. When I asked for the time off, I figured there would be a 1% chance I would get it. It was less than that: I got a reply of "Are you high!?!"

11.23.2007

2 Trees? NO! 2 Pies!

Yesterday I worked on Thanksgiving- what a yawner! We had too many people on staff, but the only great thing about working was that I got paid double time, and took home a meal for 4 (2 pies!).

Today, I'm out and about shopping for food and getting ready for my weekend home. So there's not too much exciting going on....what else is there to say?

Adios England, that's it!

11.20.2007

DVD.

I've been catching up on the act of watching DVDs.
Going into the player recently:
Dexter, s1
6 Feet Under, s1
Entourage, s3
Stargate Atlantis, downloading season 4
And I just watched the 1st ep of Flight of the Conchords. Excellent stuff.
And some Miyazaki movies back there for some class...

Also,
Getting ready for turkey day.....I'm going to be cooking on Saturday at my grandma's house. No Leon, there won't be a bunch of Swedish girls attending......

11.13.2007

Bombay the hard way.

I had today off (I've noticed it seems I only post on my days off, thus creating the illusion to the readers that all my days are off...) and it was highly productive. But it was also ANGIE'S BIRTHDAY. I had the gifts ready in the AM, and basically spent my whole day gathering ingredients/slaving away in the kitchen to produce an epic Indian meal for her and her friends. Ok, I didn't slave away all day- I did go record hunting and found the Steve Martin "Wild & Crazy Guy" vinyl....

Well there was some other stuff lodged in there too, but the menu had some vegetable curry w/ coconut, a kashmiri lentils, saag paneer, nice rice, pickled cauliflower, garlic naan, raita, salty mango pickles and great wine.

It was followed up by a greasy chocolate cake, which SOMEBODY ATE WAAAAAAAAAAY TO MUCH OF, and chai.

I am full and sleepy. I go to bed after a long and fulfilling day.

(Trever is back. I say that again, T-Man is back in Washington!)

3D Movie/Mystery

Nothing important has really hapened all week until yesterday.
We celebrated Angie's birthday ALL DAY.
-Run around Green Lake on an empty stomach (worst feeling EVER)
-Coffee and bagels
-a DVD
-IMAX movie in 3D (Seamonsters) that was super cool, and inadvertently snuck into the science center.
-A drink/trivial pursuit at an Italian spot
-Dinner at Carmelita, a vgetarian/vegan fine dining restaurant. I had a good time, and a good meal. I was happily supprised.
And then we got more suprised when the server told us that our tab had been paid for by someone who had called before we arrived and gave them his/her credit card. We cannot figure it out.

Was it you?

Pourable Tofu Madness!

My day off was busy. Productive, even.

I woke up to go to the eastside to go to the doctors and vote. I liked the fact that I was still regestered there (I did change it today) so I could vote for my cousin, Keri Andrews. I will look in one hour's time to see the results for her running, and all the other things I voted for, most notably, Prop. 1, which is for a regional transportation package that funds a combination of rails and roads. I think the plan has too little for rail and too much for roads. I also don't like the linking of the 2 different ways to move people into one plan. I'm hoping that by passing this one up, we'll be offered a plan that looks at a life without cars as being a realistic option in Seattle. I voted no, obviously.

I then had to run some errands up on the north end, and swung by a great-possibly the best reviewed- Korean restaurant called Hosoonyi. They specialize in draft tofu soup- the tofu is pourable, and it's served in super heated stone crocks that contain boiling soup at it's arrival at your table. I ate by myself, but my table was completely covered in small bowls containing the assorted kim-chees and sides. It was epic.

I then worked on my secret project- first phase- for a an hour and a half, and then dinked around, and then ran around green lake.
It was stuff all day.

saccharomyces cerevisiae

Howdy. It looks like I'm just hanging out solo on a Friday night at home. It's feels like a long while since I've just sat here, enjoying a beer/going to bed early/catching up on small projects. I haven't been dissed either- perhaps I'm dissing everyone else?....

Damon has left, a couple days ago, and his time here was greatly appreciated by me. It was nice to have a link to a past life...he did ask on his 1st night if I was planning to return. He got a lengthy reply, and told me in response, "so, Morgan got to you." I don't know if that's quite accurate, but something about Wellington definately "got" to me....
....I spoke to Morgan's mom Anne tonight, something I hadn't done in months, and she asked me if I was going to come to NZ. Hopefully in the spring I told her. We'll see....I'm having a "soul-searching" time right now in regards to my pay job, and, to keep things short and sweet, at least I have options (it's what Anne said).

So. We'll see. I'd love to take a 3 or 4 week trip down there. I would have the paid vacation to do it.

Ok. I'm just going to meld into the night. Listen to music. Drink another beer. Plot my next secret project, which involves apples and saccharomyces cerevisiae.

The night awaits!

Long weekend

It's nearing the end of my 3 day weekend. Friday night, after I got off work, I met Damon at the Alibi room. How he found it, I will never know- wait, I'll ask him right now......
He just wandered by this obscure locale to the bar, aparently. Anyways, I met him there, and he was chatting to this woman he met at the bar. The first thing I noticed about her: Insanity. She was INSANE. Like manic-happy-I-am-touching-you-talking-really-fast kind of craze. And she was probably about 6 glasses of shiraz deep (no food too).

So I had a hard time dealing with her. It was my issue I suppose, but I basically ended up extracting Damon, vaguely SAS style (in my mind) from there, delivering him to the free trade/democracy of the Pacific Inn. Where we drank and listened to rock n roll, and Tom made tons of jokes about Austrailia, which Damon took really well. I figured D just though Tom was an idiot.

Saturday was crazy, since we were getting ready for the party all day. Running errands and whatnot. Ran. Had pizza. Made a mulled cider and filled a pumpkin. Carved Pumpkins. I made a bat boy pumpkin....

The party was great. We had many utlandish costumes. Highlights: A birdfeeder, an American Gladiator (with joust), a cloud, a piñata, an outhouse, a compost pile, and I was Zombie Johnny Appleseed. I planted little plastic babies.

Lots of booze.

Sunday was a slack day. Cleaned up, cooked, and went to Capitol Hil for a night.

Today Damon and I went to Whidbey Island, to explore it's diverse riches of nature. We threw rocks on a beach at a floating log. We went to a pub in Coupeville and played pulltabs. Damon had his 1st chili burger. And we explored the 10" gun emplacements at an old fort. We saw Bald Eagles, deer and seals among the fauna. And took the ferry return. Here we sit, chillaxin' before a night of steel guitar at the little red hen, Seattle's premier country & western bar.

Phew. I am tired.

Seattle

Actually, Damon had jet lag, and didn't know he was entering this post on my blog (that was signed in). Or perhaps it was the cactus he had for breakfast....

--
It is Friday morning, I'm in the aligators large bedroom. To get here took many forms of transport,
- walking with
- the London underground 'tube'
- the Heathrow Express overland trane
- a Leufthansa flight in the wrong direction from London to Frankfurt
- a Leufthansa flight in the right direction to Vancouver
- got in double length airport bus to get to the terminal
- travellator across the airport
- turboprop connector plane
- driverless interterminal train
- commuter bus from the airport
- the aligators girlfriends 4x4

I didn't do any sea transport, sorry about that!

D.

Damon is in the building

He's here. And we had Chinese food for dinner. Now he gets to end his streak of 28 hours straight being awake.

Sleep, little Damon, sleep.

Los Taco Trucks

I was hungry last night, and trying to find the hours for a taco truck near my house.
Taco trucks are quite possibly the greatest thing ever- if they're good. I wish I had one outside my house. But guess what? Some guys started a blog for locating taco trucks in Seattle.
So all I have to do now is move nearer to one. Like in their parking lot.

mmmm.....tacos.....

and while I'm thinking about it, the future of taco trucks, called "skillet."

Best. Prank. Ever.

I found out today that one of my best friend's little brothers is a mastermind.
He goes to the same high school as I did, Capital High in Olympia, and he's a senior. The prank was done at the homecoming assembly, which, like all assemblies are stupid. But this one is really stupid, since it entails having skits that are voted on using the age old popularity contest thing.

So the prank was to crash the assembly with one guy dressed up as a giant penis wearing a Dubya mask. It gets better: the dubya "dick" shot the freshmen with a super-soaker filled with milk. (I didn't say it was a CLASSY prank!)

Here it is:

BTW, the woman chasing the penis out is the principal.

And the best part is that he didn't get caught! When it looked dire, a getaway car pulled up, and whisked him away. There is no proof of action for anyone involved.

Apparently, he's planning more. It's a skill he learned overseas....

Armed and Crazy.

I am done with changing my room around. It's really different. Perhaps over-utilized on one side, but the "guest quarters" needed to happen with Damon's arrival later this week. After he goes, I am getting a desk to make that part the "office."
I think I've moved EVERY thing except my clothes dresser, which was going to move, then didn't. I guess also things on walls are still static. One nice feature is that I've moved my record player to the corner of the room, where the floor has no creaks, thus allowing for skip-free playback. Stabil is great. I've listened to records all this evening while moving.
Played on my turntable:

Warren Zevon- Stand In The Fire (recorded live at the Roxy in LA)
Johnny Paycheck-Armed and Crazy (best song title is "Thanks to the cathouse, I'm in the doghouse with you.")
George Gershwin- An American in Paris. It's so fantastic.
Willie Nelson & Webb Pierce- In the Jailhouse Now

What a night.

Earlier today, we had our last day of ice cream production. Tomorrow is the last day of sales at the market, and what a ride it's been. We're planning on having the "last supper" afterwards. I am throwing it all down.
The Mint Triple Choco Threat is wicked, that's all I can say. True Bliss.

I've also changed what I'm dressing as for Halloween. I had planned on being a lercherous hunchback, i.e. Igor from Young Frankenstein, but a completely random idea came up, and I jumped on it. I won't say what it is here, but needless to say that when I told the costume shop guy who/what I was going to be, he said, "wow. I think that's a truly original idea."
I will say Pierce in NZ would be proud.

And, uh that's it I suppose. I tried a new pho place that was better than all others I've had recently.....

Well, off to make a late dinner. Looks like I'm staying in tonight.

Puffy Coats and Damon

I got a coat. A nice puffy-like-a-sleeping-bag one from REI. It's down, and will do the job. It has a hood and the best part is: It fits perfectly under my rain coat ( it seems made to match). and I used my dividend from being a member of $28. Free money is nice.

It's the last week of ice cream. Just got back from the factory, it' 1:12 am. A short day on Saturday, and sales at the market on Sun. It'll be over before I know it.

And then, clean the house for the Halloween party, and Damon. He'll be seeing the new room set-up.

Lot's of plans!

Coats/Jackets

It's getting cold, and I've been looking for a jacket.

I've spent hours, literally, hours searching the internet for one. There are many features I'm looking for, but seem to have gone to the wayside due to this newfangled idea of "layering."

I found one I liked/met the requirements, but didn't make the purchase then. It was on a clearance site, and so when I came back, my size was sold out.

So here I am cold, and upset.

I just want a coat.

Seattle Times Blurb

Here's us in the Times:
"A new ice-cream company run by a Seattle bartender and two local chefs began selling an eclectic mix of flavors at the Ballard Farmers Market in mid-July. Empire Ice Cream flavors vary according to the produce the owners buy each week, and they've included carrot habanero sorbet and brown sugar peach ice cream.

Each batch — made with Italiana gelato machines at a catering kitchen in lower Queen Anne — makes about a dozen 8-ounce containers, which cost $4, or three for $10, said co-founder Tom Durchman.

The bartender and chefs, whose company is called The Epicurean Empire, plan to stop selling ice cream at the market in late October to focus on finding investors, improving packaging and maybe selling to a restaurant or two."

It's small, but it's still cool!

Weekly Ramblins

This week offers a few things.
1st is the most important: Empire Ice Cream has received it's first press! It's not exceptional, but still loved. It's on the Stranger's (One of Seattle's weeklys- the one that had the blurb about THE PARTY, well, my going away party....but that's another story and I digress....) Blog. The blog is called "The Slog" (get it!?!?) . The little note was basically our weekly email- if you read this blog, you should be on the mailing list- pumped up by the food writer, whom I've reviewed a bar with, Bethany Jean Clement.
There are some interesting comments, some of which contain racial statements.

But it's all good, as they say.
We're supposed to be in the Seattle Times tomorrow.

The other thing about the Slog is it had a post on Senator Larry Craig. It was an online recipe of his on a collection called "Congress Cooks!" Amazing but true.

There might have been more stuff to write about, but it's too cold in my room- I must hide under covers, and so I leave you this true fact about me:

I fell on my head last night. Twice. Pile driver style.

Sleep Mad

Fighting off sleep from the plane trip out here....5 hours of sleep...staying up till 9:30 is hard after the beers....I peruse the internet and read this:

"They are big boys and they hoe in up front and we put the acid on at half time for our tight five to really step up a bit more and create a bit of a platform for us especially at the breakdown."

It blew my mind that someone could make any sense of that...but then again, I'm by no means a rugby aficionado...more as a "casual observer/internet info procurer."

Sleep and dreams, Mr. Nick Evans. You shall learn to speak one day (don't crush me!)

I am delirious.

9.28.2007

Relax

I am so stressed with how today has been looming for so long, and I just want it to be over with!
I'm leaving for the east coast at 10pm tonight, and will be leaving directly from work via taxi (they're paying and it's been an issue...). We're hella busy (did I just use "hella?") and I anticipate literally dropping everything I'm doing to get to the airport.
The chef is gone; his father passed away last week, and the burial is today. He shouldn't be there, but we don't have a sous chef. I've been so over worked I feel taken advantage of- I have all the responsibility without the title/compensation. And I have little help. The people coming in are almost not worth having. I cannot expect them to do a quality job, and they don't listen to the whole job's description.

Sorry, I am venting....

And there's more, which I won't regale you with the details of. Let's just say it's the last night of Ramadan....

I'll be around next week.

9.23.2007

T-Man Fu

I have the T-Man in my room as we speak. And he just asked me about the Otago Kiwi drawing I was gifted, so I told him that story. One cannot hate that story...
Trever is in town from Hawaii for the week, and he spent his day in Seattle, going about the market and Ballard, and then he came over for the big dinner, which was "Barbarian Grill Night." Lynard Skynard would've approved indeed.
We had 3 different kinds of meat in 4 different cuts.
We also had fresh black beans (which I hadn't cooked before), an awesome salad with 'maters, baby cucs, and French Breakfast radishes. Roasted baby red potatoes and leeks were also served, and some mustard pickled peppers also were present.

Ice cream was a very good day. We had lots of people doing the 3 for $10, and even had a girl buy 14 cups (at a very good discount). She also got a shirt.
And my dad and step-mom showed up, un-announced, which was cool. My dad described the carrot-habanero sorbet as confusing. It's sweet, then spicy, but the temperature is cool. Toungue disorientation can be cool.

It was a nice weekend.

9.22.2007

New Computer

I've gotten into a new Mac...and I'm diving deep, only to return for air when all is finished.
It has a built in camera......

It even has a remote, so I can lay in bed and listen to music/watch movies/photo slideshows.
It's sweet as.

9.20.2007

I'm back

I attack, alligator style!

Bite attack, again!

Hey everyone. I am here, even though it might seem like I'm stuck in the south of England....
My computer has hit it's limit, and I plan on getting a new one this weekend, if I have time. It's been too difficult to work with, and blogging has moved down the list of things to accomplish when it does work.

Anyways, things are going well. Still at the ice cream thing, and working more at the club, since Dustin has moved on to another job-which is good for him.

I also wanted to say that I saw the rumpus pics at Damon's blog, and I must say I noticed Jon Ball does take a nice picture. Really does. And when did Morgue get his "Hutt Valley" shirt?
I wish I had been there. It was nice to see all the people I know indeed.

Following the All Blacks at the WC, and have to say, I like the results....I found a bar I can go to to watch the games. It's the "Kangaroo and Kiwi Pub." Guess what it's deal is.
I'll be back after I get the new CPU, ro-bros.

9.09.2007

Insomniac

I cannot sleep right now. It's just after 3am. I am tired, and I worked a long day- I did both jobs on Saturday...but my mind is just excited.
I'm excited because of how much we're gonna make today! We have, for the 1st time, PERFECT WEATHER. 80 degrees and Sunny.
I am quite positive, based on our building-up nature of the past few weeks, we'll hit a sales goal that I know we all want, and even I never quite thought-or at least recognized that it was a near perfect day-we'd hit it.

But we can do it, and we will do it today.
And then, it'll be reward time: Bring home one of the machines and make margaritas.

That's right.

I'll let all y'all know how it goes. Monday, I'm planning on going to the Puyallup Fair for the 1st time in years. It's scone city baby!

9.01.2007

2 Machines=I likey

Having the new machine is SWEET! We went bonkers-or at least it felt like it. It was about 4.5 hours at the factory, and we froze everything we could.

TD and I didn't even have time for me to whomp him at dominoes. He brings the bones, and I own 'em....
